Morning walk in winter safe or not? Expert says there is a right time

New Delhi: Going for a morning walk is without a doubt one of the most important factors of a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Not only does it aid digestion, but it is also instrumental in weight, heart disease, and diabetes management. Doctors continue to stress the importance of including it in the routine concerning the state of health and comorbidities. But during the cold months of the year, the time one picks for a morning walk can make a lot of difference. When the cold winds are peaking in the early hours, one must be twice as careful about stepping out as it may do more harm than good.

Walking in winter can be beneficial for health, but there are key factors to consider for it to be safe and effective. Winter walks improve circulation, boost immunity, and uplift mood, combating the “winter blues” that many experience. Best time for a walk in winter

The best times to walk in winter are usually during midday, around 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., when temperatures are warmer, and daylight is abundant. Walking during daylight helps absorb essential vitamin D, which can be lower in winter. It’s wise to dress in layers, wear warm accessories like gloves and a hat, and stay hydrated, as the cold can sometimes reduce our sense of thirst.

Worst time to walk in winter

Avoid walking during severe cold waves, fog, or icy conditions, as they increase the risk of slips, falls, and respiratory issues. People with asthma or respiratory sensitivities should exercise caution, as cold air can trigger breathing difficulties. If temperatures drop below freezing, it’s better to switch to indoor exercises or walk-in safe, sheltered areas. Winter walking, when done with precautions, can be a refreshing and health-boosting activity. By dressing warmly and choosing the right time, you can enjoy the benefits of a winter walk safely.
