Aizawl: While half the city of Lawngtlai in Mizoram dozed off, an auto driver plying his three-wheeler, had no idea that one unconscious act of honesty would make him popular overnight. The autorickshaw driver gained widespread respect when he discovered an abandoned bag with Rs 17 lakh, that was mistakenly left by a Myanmar businessman in his auto, on Thursday. He was the last passenger in his vehicle, at Lauwngtlai. Auto driver Lalhmingmuana, without a second thought, returned the money to the man, tracing him to the location where he had dropped him.
It was around 9 pm, at night, when Henry Lalhmingmuana had almost retired for the day, when his last passenger boarded the autorickshaw on June 19. Lalhmingmuana dropped him at the Husop Hotel. The Myanmar based businessman had left his bag full of money in the vehicle.
Auto driver returns bag
The merchant upon reaching the hotel, discovered that his bag was missing. He became worried as he did not even kn0w any of Henry’s identification or contact details. But fate had a different plan for the businessman.
As soon as Lalhmingmuana discovered the bag, he drove back to the hotel and returned the passenger’s bag. The driver was an honest man and did not even once think of keeping the cash-filled bag.
Praised for honesty
As Lalhmingmuana, returned the money without expecting anything in return, the city’s Richshaw Owners Association praised the auto driver for being honest. According to the Lawngtlai Post, Lawngtlai Auto Rickshaw Owners’ Association President C Zathianga talking about the details of the incident, said that the passenger had taken the auto from Hotel Husop near the Assam Rifles Camp to Lawngtlai-III and, despite not knowing the driver or the vehicle’s registration, the money was safely returned as the driver went back to the hotel to give back the bag.
