New Delhi: People’s Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday said that she will suspend her campaign for the ongoing J&K assembly elections for a day in solidarity with Palestine and Lebanon, after the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and other martyrs from Lebanon and Gaza. In a post on X, the former J&K chief minister expressed her party’s support for the people of Palestine and Lebanon during this time of grief.
“Cancelling my campaign tomorrow in solidarity with the martyrs of Lebanon & Gaza, especially Hassan Nasarullah,” Mufti said. “We stand with the people of Palestine & Lebanon in this hour of immense grief & exemplary resistance,” she added.
Protests in Srinagar
Protests erupted in Srinagar, Kashmir in the Alamgiri Bazar and Hawal areas, in response to the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Demonstrators gathered to voice their outrage and solidarity. They were heard shouting ‘Hezbollah hamari jaan hai’ (Hezbollah is everything to us).
Nasrallah killed in airstrike
The Israeli military on Saturday announced that it had “eliminated” Hassan Nasrallah, the longtime leader of the Hezbollah militant group, in a precision airstrike in Beirut the previous day. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said, “Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorize the world.” The strike reportedly targeted a meeting of Hezbollah leaders at their headquarters in Dahiyeh, a southern suburb of the Lebanese capital.
In other news, elections in Jammu and Kashmir are taking place in three phases. The first phase, covering 24 seats, was held on September 18, after by the second phase for 26 seats on September 25. Voting for the third phase is scheduled for October 1, with results to be announced on October 8.
