Manipur’s volatile situation deteriorated significantly following the arrest of leaders from the Meitei organisation Arambai Tenggol. This arrest triggered widespread protests and violent clashes between protesters and security forces in Imphal on Saturday evening. The demonstrators were pouring petrol on themselves and threatening self-immolation. The unrest saw arson, road blockades, and clashes with security forces, prompting a five-day internet suspension in five valley districts.
In response, authorities imposed a complete curfew in Bishnupur district, effective from 11 pm Saturday, and suspended internet and mobile data services for five days across five districts: Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur. District Magistrates issued prohibitory orders restricting gatherings of four or more people in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, and Kakching districts.
The arrest of Kanan Singh, identified as the chief commander of Arambai Tenggols’ operational group, appears to have been a key catalyst for the unrest. Criticism has been levelled at the authorities for the perceived inadequate security arrangements during the transfer of Singh and four other individuals. Reports suggest that the convoy transporting the detainees was overwhelmed by protesters near Khwairamband, resulting in injuries and damage to property, including a security bus being burned.
The handling of the situation has drawn sharp criticism from various political parties. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi expressed serious concerns, highlighting the ongoing violence, deaths, displacement, and the government’s apparent inability to restore peace, despite President’s Rule being in effect. Twenty-five MLAs and one MP met with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to voice their concerns directly. The incident underscores the ongoing fragility of the peace process and the deep-seated tensions in Manipur. The lack of clarity surrounding the arrests, coupled with the inadequate security response, has been identified as a critical factor which exacerbated the already tense situation.
