Mumbai: A violent altercation broke out between two groups in the Vyavhare Galli area of Washim city on Thursday evening. It led to widespread panic and tension in the locality. The clash reportedly began over a social media status, which quickly escalated into a full fledged confrontation. It involved stone pelting and brandishing of weapons.
Eyewitnesses said that members from both sides took to the streets armed with swords, iron rods and other sharp objects. It created chaos and fear among local residents. The sudden outbreak of violence led to the disruption of normal life.
Outrage over social media status escalates into full-scale violence
Videos and images circulating on social media showed both groups hurling stones and shouting aggressively. It left the entire area tensed and alarmed. It led to a situation of “complete lawlessness” lasting several minutes before the police arrived, said locals.
Police teams rushed to the spot soon after receiving information regarding the clash and brought the situation under control. No casualties or severe injuries were reported.
Investigations underway
The police officials confirmed that an investigation is underway and CCTV footage from the area is being closely examined to identify those who were involved in the clashes. Efforts are being made to track down and detain the accused, they added.
As of now, a tense calm prevails in the area. This outbreak has left the local residents in shock and several residents fear that more such incidents might occur in future.
Earlier this year, another instance of stone pelting was reported from Maharashtra’s Nandurbar city. In this case, clashes erupted after a rickshaw and motorcycle were involved in an accident. The incident led to clashes between two groups.
