New Delhi: Maharashtra is set to enhance its railway infrastructure with the transformation of a historic metre gauge line in Jalgaon’s Khandesh region into a broad gauge track. This long-awaited upgrade promises better connectivity and smoother transport for thousands of passengers in north Maharashtra.
The 53-km Pachora-Jamner railway line, originally laid during the British era, will soon undergo a complete gauge conversion. After years of persistent appeals by local residents and elected leaders, the project has finally received the green light. It is expected to significantly improve the state’s rail services, particularly for rural and agricultural communities.
The Rs 568.86 crore civil contract has been awarded to Ashoka Buildcon Limited, which secured the project with the lowest bid. Work is expected to commence shortly and will be completed within 30 months. The first phase will focus on civil construction such as bridges, overpasses, underpasses, rail yards, and roads. Track laying, electrification, and installation of signaling systems will follow in the second phase.
Officials say the upgraded Pachora-Jamner line will play a vital role in supporting the local economy. It is especially important for the agricultural sector, helping farmers move their produce more efficiently and gain access to larger markets. The new line is also set to benefit local industries, tourism and educational institutions by improving transport access across the region.
This initiative aligns with the central government’s ongoing push to improve transport infrastructure nationwide. With Indian Railways already ranking as the fourth-largest rail network globally and second in Asia after China, the modernisation of regional lines like Pachora-Jamner reflects a commitment to inclusive development. By blending historical legacy with modern progress, the upcoming broad gauge line marks a new chapter in Maharashtra’s journey toward greater connectivity and economic growth.
