Maharashtra government reschedules Eid-e-Milad holiday in Mumbai

New Delhi: The Maharashtra government on Friday rescheduled the Eid-e-Milad holiday in Mumbai from September 16 to September 18, following a request from the local Muslim community. The decision was made to avoid a clash with Anant Chaturdashi, the final day of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, which falls on September 17 this year.

In an official statement released by the state authorities, it was highlighted that the Muslim community had voluntarily agreed to shift their Eid-e-Milad processions to September 18. This move was made to ensure that both religious celebrations could proceed smoothly without logistical issues, given the significance of Ganpati Visarjan, the immersion of Ganesh idols, which typically attracts large crowds across Mumbai.

The proposal for rescheduling was put forward by the Khilafat House in Byculla, which represents the Muslim community, and was subsequently accepted by the state government. In support of this decision, Maharashtra Congress leader Naseem Khan wrote to chief minister Eknath Shinde, requesting that September 18 be officially declared the Eid-e-Milad holiday instead of the original date.

Birth of Prophet Muhammad

Traditionally, Eid-e-Milad, which commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad, is observed based on the sighting of the moon. However, this year marks the second consecutive occasion where the Muslim community in Mumbai has chosen to reschedule their celebrations.

The state government has also announced that district collectors outside Mumbai have the discretion to make similar adjustments to the Eid-e-Milad holiday, depending on local circumstances.
