‘J&K made Union Territory because it is Muslim majority’: Farooq Abdullah

New Delhi: National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah criticised the Modi government on Saturday (September 21) in Jammu and Kashmir. The former chief minister said that the BJP-led central government turned Jammu and Kashmir into a union territory because it has a Muslim-majority population.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Farooq Abdullah took a swipe at the BJP and Prime Minister Modi. He said, “Whenever they make a mistake, they bring up Pakistan. They make mistakes themselves and then accuse us of being Pakistanis. They claim that the alliance between Rahul Gandhi and Farooq Abdullah is backed by Pakistan. What do we have to do with Pakistan?” He added, “I believe they themselves are Pakistanis and are portraying us as the threat.”

‘Has terrorism ended?

He further criticised the Modi-led BJP government, saying that they used to claim Article 370 was the cause of terrorism. “Now they are in power. Has terrorism ended?” he asked. He mentioned the recent encounter in Reasi. He suggested that the government still blames Article 370. The JKNC chief also said, “Jammu and Kashmir was downgraded to a union territory because of its Muslim majority.”

Abdullah accuses Modi govt of divisive politics

He continued his criticism, accusing the Modi government and BJP of dividing Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians and of attempting to fracture India. He said, “They had freed Pakistanis, who were enemies of the country. Have you forgotten?” He questioned their claims of strengthening India, suggesting they are more focused on securing their own power through deceit. “Only time will reveal who supports whom. The results will be out on October 8,” he added.

On Friday, Abdullah responded to PM Modi, asserting that his party would never adopt Pakistan’s agenda. This statement came after Modi’s claim that the National Conference, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Congress were promoting the interests of the neighbouring country in Jammu and Kashmir.
