Jharkhand polls: 21 names in Congress’ 1st list, INDIA bloc seat sharing deal today

Ranchi: The Congress has released its first list comprising 21 candidates for the upcoming Jharkhand Assembly elections. Finance Minister Rameshwar Oraon has been fielded from the Lohardaga constituency, reserved for Scheduled Tribes. At the same time, senior leader Ajoy Kumar, who is also the party’s in-charge for Tripura, Odisha, and Nagaland, will run for the Jamshedpur East seat.

Kumar, a former police officer, who previously served as a Lok Sabha MP from Jamshedpur, is now contesting the Assembly elections. Oraon, also a former police officer and a former chief of the Jharkhand Congress, is running for office as well.

Shilpi Neha Tirkey has been nominated to contest from the Mandar (ST) constituency, where she currently serves as the MLA. Her father, Bandhu Tirkey, is the chairman of the Congress manifesto committee for the upcoming Jharkhand elections.

Earlier, top Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, former party chiefs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, and other senior figures, discussed the candidates’ names during a meeting of the Central Election Committee.

INDIA bloc seat sharing for Jharkhand elections

On Monday night, the Congress’ Central Election Committee met in Delhi to finalise the candidates for the upcoming Jharkhand Assembly elections, clearing nominees for around 70% of the seats the party will contest, according to AICC in-charge for the state Ghulam Ahmad Mir. He also expressed confidence that a final seat-sharing agreement with the INDIA bloc allies would be reached by Tuesday.

The meeting at the Congress headquarters was attended by party president Mallikarjun Kharge, former party chiefs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, Congress general secretary (in-charge of Organisation) K.C. Venugopal, Jharkhand Congress chief Keshav Mahto Kamlesh, and AICC in-charge Ghulam Ahmad Mir, among others.
