Imphal: Manipur government suspended internet and mobile data services, including VSAT and VPN, in five districts of the state for five days starting from 11.45 pm on June 7.
The decision was taken due to the worsening law and order situation, according to a notice issued by Manipur Police.
Restrictions imposed in five districts of Manipur
The suspension affects the districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur. Officials said the move is aimed at preventing the spread of hate messages, videos, and other harmful content on social media that could further incite violence.
The police stated that there is a strong fear that anti-social elements may misuse social media platforms to circulate inflammatory material, which could create serious problems in maintaining peace and order.
Alongside the internet shutdown, a total curfew has been imposed in Bishnupur district. The district magistrates of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur have also issued prohibitory orders to control the situation.
Why prohibitory orders issued in Manipur?
These orders restrict the gathering of four or more people in public spaces in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, and Kakching.
Authorities have also banned the carrying of weapons, including firearms, sticks, stones, swords, or any sharp-edged objects, across these districts.
The police said that these emergency orders were passed without prior notice due to the seriousness of the situation. They warned that anyone found violating the rules will face strict legal action.
