India’s youngest body donor: Two-and-a-half-day-old baby donated to Dehradun hospital

Dehradun: The family of a two-and-a-half-day-old baby donated her body for medical study at Doon Hospital in Dehradun, making her the youngest donor in the country. Saraswati had been suffering from a heart-related condition known as asphyxia and passed away shortly after birth.

Doctors confirmed that the girl had a heart disease, which led to her death this morning. Her father, Ram Mihar, works in a factory in Haridwar. Dr. Rajendra Saini of Haridwar encouraged the family to donate the body. The family then reached out to Mukesh Goyal of Dadhichi Deh Daan Samiti, and the girl’s body was donated through the committee this morning.

This is reportedly the first instance of body donation at such a young age in the country. The girl’s organs will be preserved in the museum of Doon Medical College to raise awareness about body donation. The committee has named her Saraswati. Assistant Professor at Doon hospital Anatomy department, Dr. Rajesh Kumar Maurya stated, “This is the first instance in the country where an organ donation has occurred at such a young age.” The donated body will be preserved in the Doon Medical College Museum to promote awareness about organ donation.

A doctor from Haridwar encouraged family for this donation

The bereaved family of the newborn made this difficult decision in hopes of contributing to medical education and research. As per the reports, Dr. Rajendra Saini of Haridwar encouraged the family to consider organ donation. Following his guidance, the family contacted Mukesh Goyal from the Dadhichi Body Donation Committee. Through this committee, the body was donated on Wednesday morning.

According to hospital officials, the donation will be a valuable resource for medical students and researchers, enhancing their understanding of pediatric health issues and potentially saving future lives. This selfless act also raises awareness about the importance of organ donation in India. Dr. M.K. Pant, head of the Anatomy Department, remarked, “Such cases are extremely rare, especially when it involves the body donation of a child just a few days old.” He further explained that a thermal coating will be applied to preserve the child’s body for an extended period.
