Indian fisherman dies in Karachi jail, eighth Indian to die in Pakistan since 2022

New Delhi: Indian fisherman Babu died in Karachi jail on Thursday (January 23), Indian government sources said. Babu had been arrested by Pakistani authorities in 2022. Although he had served his sentence and his Indian nationality was confirmed, he was not released by the Pakistani authorities.

The sources added that in the last two years, this is the eighth Indian fisherman to have died in Pakistan. Currently, 180 Indian fishermen who have served their sentences are awaiting release from Pakistani jails. India has been consistently urging Pakistan for the early release of these prisoners.
