India weather today: IMD warns of heavy rain in Madhya Pradesh, UP and Uttarakhand

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted light to moderate rain in parts of Central, Northwest, East, and Northeast India, with some areas likely to witness heavy downpours. Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand are expected to receive significant rainfall.

The IMD on Wednesday said that a depression over Northeast Madhya Pradesh has been moving west-northwest at a speed of 17 km per hour over the past six hours. “As of 11.30 pm on September 17, the system was centred near latitude 24.2°N and longitude 80.3°E, approximately 160 km west of Sidhi, 70 km southwest of Satna, and 100 km south-southeast of Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh. It is expected to continue moving west-northwest across northern Madhya Pradesh and parts of southwestern Uttar Pradesh, gradually weakening into a Well-Marked Low-Pressure Area within the next 24 hours,” stated the IMD. 

Weather forecast for Central India

Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh are expected to experience scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall throughout the week.

Northwest Madhya Pradesh will see heavy rainfall on September 18. North Chhattisgarh can also expect heavy rain on September 18.

Weather forecast for Northwest India

In northwestern region, including Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and East Rajasthan, scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall is expected on September 18, followed by isolated light rainfall over the next five days. 

Heavy rain is forecasted in West Uttar Pradesh and Southeast Uttar Pradesh on September 18. Uttarakhand will likely experience heavy rain on September 18 and East Rajasthan and Haryana can expect heavy showers on September 18.

Weather forecast for Northeast India

East and Northeast India are set to experience scattered light to moderate rainfall throughout the week. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands will see widespread rain with isolated heavy showers from September 18 to 20. 

Bihar and Jharkhand may experience heavy rainfall on September 18, while Assam and Meghalaya could see rain on September 19. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura will likely receive heavy rain on September 18 and 19.

Weather warning for Delhi-NCR

For Delhi-NCR, the weather forecast for September 18 predicts generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain or thundershowers. Winds are expected to be strong, with speeds reaching 25-35 km per hour. 

The IMD has warned of potential minor traffic disruptions due to water accumulation in low-lying areas and on roads. There is also an increased risk of vehicle accidents because of slippery conditions caused by the rain.
