New Delhi: India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, P. Harish, delivered a scathing condemnation of Pakistan’s actions at a UN Security Council meeting. His address focused on Pakistan’s alleged hypocrisy regarding terrorism and its violations of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty. The statement came in response to comments made by Pakistan’s UN ambassador, Aasim Iftikhar Ahmad, who raised the Kashmir issue and the recent conflict between the two nations.
Harish’s remarks strongly criticised Pakistan’s alleged state-sponsored terrorism, presenting evidence of thousands of attacks against India over the past decade. He specifically mentioned the recent terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir, as a stark example of Pakistan’s disregard for civilian life. He further asserted that Pakistan’s actions demonstrate a complete disregard for the distinction between terrorists and civilians, citing instances where Pakistani military and government officials paid respects at the funerals of terrorists killed in Operation Sindhur.
A central component of Harish’s address focused on Pakistan’s alleged violations of the Indus Waters Treaty. He outlined four key points: Indias long-standing commitment to the treaty; Pakistans consistent undermining of the treatys spirit through warfare and terrorism; Pakistans refusal to discuss modifications to the treaty to address evolving security concerns, infrastructure needs, and climate change; and Indias decision to suspend its obligations under the treaty until Pakistan credibly ends its support for cross-border terrorism.
Beyond the treaty, Harish also detailed instances of Pakistani shelling targeting Indian border villages and places of worship, including Gurdwaras, resulting in significant civilian casualties. He urged the international community to condemn this behaviour and take measures to protect civilians in the region. The address underscored the deep-seated tensions and accusations between India and Pakistan, highlighting the serious nature of the allegations presented by India before the UN Security Council. The international community’s response to these accusations remains to be seen.
