India sees Covid-19 surge with 3,758 active cases; Kerala, Maharashtra, Delhi worst-hit

New Delhi: India has reported a notable spike in Covid-19 cases, with the number of active infections climbing to 3,758 as of Sunday, June 1, according to data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). This marks the first major increase in months, with 363 new cases detected in the past 24 hours alone.

Kerala continues to report the highest number of active Covid-19 cases in the country, with 1,400 patients currently under treatment. Maharashtra follows with 485 cases, while Delhi has 436 active cases. In the last 24 hours, these three states recorded 64, 18, and 61 new cases respectively, as per the latest figures from the health ministry.

Covid-related deaths across states

The country recorded two Covid-related deaths in the past 24 hours—one each in Kerala and Karnataka. In Karnataka, health officials confirmed the death of a 63-year-old man who was also diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis, squamous cell carcinoma of the buccal mucosa, and an incidental Covid-19 infection. In Kerala, a 24-year-old woman with Covid-19 succumbed to complications arising from sepsis, hypertension, and decompensated chronic liver disease (DCLD).

Karnataka issues advisory amid rising cases

Amid the uptick in infections, the Karnataka government on Saturday released a public advisory encouraging residents to adopt preventive measures. People have been urged to wear masks in crowded areas, maintain physical distancing, and follow proper hygiene protocols to contain the virus’s spread.

Delhi records its first death in current surge

Delhi also reported a Covid-linked fatality amid the latest rise in cases. Officials confirmed the death of a 60-year-old woman on Saturday. “The woman was suffering from acute intestinal obstruction post-laparotomy. The Covid-19 finding was incidental,” PTI quoted an official as saying.

This latest spike has prompted health authorities to remain vigilant, although no nationwide restrictions have been announced yet.
