‘India has lot of potential’: Modi’s mega push for ‘Design in India’ semiconductors

New York: At a time when there is barely an aspect of life untouched by technology, it becomes crucial to strike a balance between the use of tech and democratic values to ensure the well-being of humanity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday during the CEOs roundtable in New York.

The meeting took place at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel on Sunday as part of the second leg of Modi’s three-day visit to the US. It included CEOs from 15 major US-based firms involved in advanced technologies such as AI, quantum computing, and semiconductors.

Here are PM Modi’s top quotes from the CEOs roundtable:

  • The policy we brought in the semiconductor sector is being welcomed in India and people related to this sector are very excited to invest in India.
  • We are putting a lot of focus on ‘Design in India’. India has a lot of potential to become a reliable partner in global semiconductor supply chain systems.
  • The electronic sector in India is worth more than 150 billion dollars and we aim to take it to 500 billion dollars by 2030 to create six million job opportunities in this sector.
  • The 21st century is technology-driven. There’s hardly an aspect of life that isn’t affected by technology. However, in such a time it becomes even more crucial for us to balance out the use of technology and our democratic values, as it ensures the well-being of humankind.
  • The enthusiasm and confidence I see for Bharat is very heartening because when experts like you speak about the changing world and India’s prospects, it increases our confidence in policymaking in India too.
  • Technology without democracy creates an environment for trouble. India is a country that has talent, democracy and a market.
  • When the world’s largest democracy grows rapidly, it also assures global peace and prosperity.
  • Technology is a crucial pillar of India’s journey toward becoming a developed nation. As a result, we have now established unprecedented opportunities for technological collaboration and investment in India.
  • Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology– ICET, is our commitment to inclusive innovations. Over the past decade, Bharat has moved forward with the mantra of ‘Reform, Perform and Transform’.
  • India is one of the first countries to have worked on AI strategies. To me, AI means ‘America-India’. That’s the power we want to strengthen.
  • India has democratised the use of technology, thereby bridging the divides. India is focusing on the ethical use of AI.
