Imphal: Manipur’s capital city Imphal is set for significant development with the construction of a new 51.23-kilometre Ring Road. This ambitious project, costing Rs 1766 crore, has been funded by the Asian Development Bank. It aims to revolutionise the city’s infrastructure and address its longstanding issue of chronic traffic congestion.
The Ring Road traverses Imphal East and West districts, promising to significantly improve connectivity and ease the burden on the city’s existing road network. Apart from keeping in mind the immediate infrastructural benefits, the project is designed with sustainability and social inclusion at its core. The plan incorporates the use of electric buses and e-rickshaws, with women drivers at the helm. This initiative promotes environmentally friendly transportation while simultaneously empowering women and contributing to gender equality within the city’s transport sector.
Construction is progressing steadily, with substantial progress already evident. Landfilling and earthworks have been completed along a two-kilometre stretch from Khurai Angom Leikai to Tinsid Road, extending 500 metres beyond. Upon completion, the Ring Roads’ impact will be far-reaching. It is anticipated to significantly reduce congestion in densely populated market areas, allowing for improved accessibility and smoother traffic flow. Equally importantly, the enhanced connectivity will significantly benefit emergency services, reducing response times and enabling quicker access to critical care for residents.
For Imphal residents, the benefits extend beyond simply improved traffic flow. The project represents a tangible step towards a more modern, efficient, and inclusive city. The Ring Road could become a symbol of progress, promoting economic development and a better quality of life for the city’s inhabitants. The careful consideration given to sustainability and gender inclusivity solidifies this project as a model for urban development, demonstrating a commitment to both environmental responsibility and social equity. As the project nears completion, Imphal moves one step closer to a smarter, faster, and more connected city.
