IMD weather forecast: Rain may continue to batter Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, other states

New Delhi: Heavy rainfall is likely to continue to batter Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on Thursday, the India Meteorological Department said. The four states have been experiencing heavy showers for the past few weeks. The incessant downpour has crippled normal life in these states and claimed several lives.

According to weather officer, several districts in Gujarat are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rains over the next one week. Heavy downpours in the last week of August have thrown normal life out of gear in the state and claimed 49 lives, officials said. On Tuesday, the government’s weather watch group held a meeting in Gandhinagar in view of the rain forecast and departments concerned were directed to remain alert and take measures to resolve the issue of flooding.

Rainfall forecast for these states

Heavy rainfall is likely to continue in eastern Rajasthan for the next four to five days, the Meteorological Center Jaipur said. While some parts of Jodhpur and Bikaner divisions of western Rajasthan are expected to receive moderate to heavy rains for the next two to three days, there is possibility of heavy rains at some places in Jodhpur division for the next two days.

Meanwhile, the IMD has forecast “heavy rainfall” at isolated places in Chhattisgarh, east Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, in addition to parts of east and northeast India, on Thursday. It also warned of “heavy to very heavy rainfall” at isolated places in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

According to meteorological centre of the IMD in Hyderabad, Jayashankar Bhupalpally and Mulugu districts of Telangana are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rain on Thursday. At least 16 people have been killed in rain-related incidents in Telangana as several parts of the state experienced incessant rainfall for three days beginning August 31

The IMD warned light to moderate rainfall may lash many places of north coastal Andhra Pradesh till September 8 and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh till Friday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted in one or two places in Eluru and Alluri Sitarama Raju district, and heavy rainfall at one or two places in Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, Vizianagaram, Anakapalli and Parvatipuram Manyam districts, on Thursday.

Rainfall warning for Delhi, Haryana

The Met office also predicted isolated to scattered rainfall in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Bihar, Jharkhand and  Odisha during the week. Rainfall alert has been issued for several northeastern states. “Isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during next 7 days; Arunachal Pradesh during 05th – 06th; Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on 05th; Bihar on 05th and 06th; Odisha during 05th – 08th September,” the IMD said.
