IMD warns of heavy rain in UP, Himachal; when will monsoon exit India this year?

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted widespread rainfall across several parts of the country, with warnings of heavy to extremely heavy downpours in specific areas.

Many states received more than average rainfall this year. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon’s retreat is expected to begin between September 19 and September 25.

Forecast for Northwest India

Light to moderate rainfall is expected to continue across many parts of Northwest India. Scattered showers will occur in states like Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and East Rajasthan over the weekend.

The IMD has issued an alert for extremely heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand on September 14, with chances of very heavy rain in West Uttar Pradesh on the same day. The forecast also predicts heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh and Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on September 14. East Uttar Pradesh can expect heavy rainfall from September 14 to 18, while West Uttar Pradesh will experience it on September 17, and 18.

Forecast for West and Central India

The western coastal areas, particularly Konkan and Goa, are likely to see moderate rainfall throughout the week. Scattered showers will also occur in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, and parts of Gujarat, with more isolated rainfall in Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada.

Heavy rainfall is forecasted in East Madhya Pradesh on September 17 and Chhattisgarh on September 16. Additionally, West Madhya Pradesh can expect significant rain on September 18 and 19, with continuous heavy rainfall in East Madhya Pradesh from September 16 to 19, and in Chhattisgarh from September 14 to 17.

Forecast for East and Northeast India

The northeastern states will experience widespread light to moderate rainfall throughout the week, particularly in Northeast India, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Gangetic West Bengal, and Jharkhand. Heavy rains are expected to hit Gangetic West Bengal on September 14, and north Odisha on September 14. 

Mizoram and Tripura will also receive very heavy rainfall on September 14, while Jharkhand can expect it on September 14 and 15. The IMD has also issued warnings for isolated heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh from September 14 to 16, and in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Manipur from September 15 to 17.

Forecast for South Peninsular India

In the southern states, Coastal Karnataka is likely to experience widespread rainfall, while Kerala, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry will receive scattered showers throughout the week. 

Moderate to isolated rain is also expected in Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Interior Karnataka.
