New Delhi: The national capital is reeling under intense heatwave, with mercury soaring past 45 degrees Celsius. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a new ‘red’ alert for Delhi.
Earlier, sounding a warning of severe heatwave condition, the IMD had issued orange alert for Delhi. Now, the Met department has revised the warning to a red alert. According to the nowcast or the national capital, the red alert will remain in effect for both Wednesday and Thursday.
On the basis of the bulletin issued at 2 pm, the weather department has said that heatwave conditions will persist over the Delhi-NCR as temperatures go beyond the 45 degrees Celsius mark.
The IMD said: “Heatwave conditions are likely to prevail at many places across Delhi-NCR, with temperatures ranging between 44 degrees Celsius and 46 degrees Celsius.”
According to a PTI report, a maximum temperature of 43.8 degrees Celsius was recorded Delhi’s Safdarjung substation. Ayanagar recorded a maximum temperature of 45.5 degrees Celsius. These temperatures are above normal, the weather department pointed out.
Dr Naresh Kumar, senior scientist at IMD, was quoted as saying to PTI that Delhi-NCR is under red alert today and tomorrow, followed by an orange alert on June 13. “Light rain and thunderstorms are possible on the night of June 13 due to a western disturbance, which may bring some relief.”
IMD bulletin said that heatwave conditions are “very likely at many/some places over Jammu-Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi” from June 11 to 14. Besides, an intense heatwave warning has been issued for June 11 and 12.
