How police cornered and neutralised 3 Khalistani terrorists in Pilibhit

New Delhi: Three Khalistani terrorists were gunned down in an encounter with the police in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit district during the early hours of Monday. The trio was accused of carrying out an attack on a police post in Punjab’s Gurdaspur. They allegedly threw grenades on the police post. The accused, Gurvinder Singh (25), Virender Singh alias Ravi (23), and Jaspreet Singh alias Pratap Singh (18), were members of a banned organisation named Khalistan Commando Force.

Following the encounter, the police recovered two AK-47 rifles, two Glock pistols, and several live rounds from their possession.

How did the encounter take place

A team from the Punjab Police sounded an alert to the Pilibhit Police about the presence of the three suspects in an area under the jurisdiction of the Puranpur police station. The Pilibhit cops acted on this information and initiated an operation. The police had also got a tip-off about three persons carrying suspicious materials in Puranpur.

Acting on the information, the police trapped the suspects, leading to an exchange of fire in the early hours of Monday, during which all the three accused were shot down.

In a media statement, a senior official of the Pilibihit Police said, “The three fired at the police team on being challenged and in the retaliatory firing, they were gunned down. The joint operation was conducted by teams of Punjab Police and Uttar Pradesh Police. The Punjab Police team also told us about their foreign connections.”

Providing details about the encounter, Pilibhit SP Avinash Pandey said that when the terrorists were chased and stopped, they started firing on the police teams, prompting to police to retaliate. The three terrorists sustained critical injuries, after which they were rushed to the District Hospital where they were declared dead. “Two of our constables, Sumit and Shahnawaz have been injured and are under treatment,” the SP added.

The encounter took place in the jurisdiction of Puranpur police station. An investigation has been initiated into the entire incident.

On December 19, an explosion had taken place at the abandoned police post in Kalanaur sub-division of Gurdaspur district. Although the attack occurred during stepped-up police vigilance, it fortunately resulted in no loss of life or damage to property. Khalistan Zindabad Force claimed responsibility for the attack in an unverified report on social media.
