New Delhi: Days after the Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 people were killed and several others were injured, US Vice President JD Vance has expressed hope that the incident would not lead to ‘broader regional conflict’. He also urged Pakistan to cooperate with India in hunting down terrorists responsible for this gruesome incident.
Incidentally, the attack took place when he was in India with his family between April 21 and April 24. Speaking to Fox News, Vance expressed concerns over the tense situation in the region and said he observed that when tensions increase between two nuclear powers, the situation becomes worrisome. He added that the US is in touch with both India and Pakistan and is trying to defuse tensions.
‘Hope Pakistan will cooperate with India’
“Our hope here is that India responds to this terrorist attack in a way that doesn’t lead to a broader regional conflict. And we hope, frankly, that Pakistan, to the extent that they’re responsible, cooperates with India to make sure that the terrorists sometimes operating in their territory are hunted down and dealt with,” he said.
Earlier, the tensions between India and Pakistan have increased in recent days after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. While the entire country grew angry over the incident, the Centre pledged tough actions against perpetrators this time.
Taking tough actions soon after the incident, India announced the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty. I also announced the reduction of its embassy staff members in Pakistan and the return of Pakistani citizens from India. On the other hand, Pakistan also announced the suspension of the Simla agreement and the closure of its airports for Indian Airlines, which was later reciprocated by India.
While Pakistan has given free hands to defence forces to select their mode of operations and target locations, several countries, including China and US have urged India and Pakistan to reduce tensions.
