New Delhi: Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Parliament Rahul Gandhi arrived in Bhopal on June 3. He took part in a campaign being started in Madhya Pradesh with the aim to strengthen Congress at the grassroots level there and infusing new enthusiasm among workers for the next state Assembly elections which is slated to be held in 2028.
Before launching the campaign, Gandhi addressed a meeting of the political affairs committee of Congress and discussed important matters pertaining state politics with the senior leaders of the party. The state Congress President Jitu Patwari and former CM Kamal Nath gave Gandhi a warm welcome as he arrived at the airport in Bhopal.
During the meeting, a Congress MLA told him that the party does not have any face in Madhya Pradesh. According to TV9 Network, Rahul Gandhi responded, “Who said that we do not have a face? We have 10 faces in the state.” He added, “Indiscipline will not be acceptable any more in the party. Earlier it may have been ignored but now it will not be tolerated.”
Gandhi also said, “The sleeper cells in Congress are also under surveillance. Such people will be shown the door. The district president should not be just a name but also a person of work. If he does not work, then he will be removed. It is not necessary that once he is appointed, he will remain in the post forever.”
Gandhi chaired a meeting meeting at Bhopal’s state Congress office and it was attended by all the important Congress leaders in the state, including general secretary in-charge Harish Choudhary, AICC organisation in-charge K.C. Venugopal, Patwari, Kamal Nath, Digvijaya Singh, Umang Singhar, Arun Yadav, Sajjan Verma, Vivek Tankha, Ajay Singh, Shobha Ojha and others. The meeting took place at ‘Indira Bhawan’ in Bhopal.
The Congress was in power in Madhya Pradesh between December 2018 and March 2020 when Kamal Nath was the Chief Minister of the state. Apart from that, it has not come to power in Madhya Pradesh since 2003.
