‘Hang him to death’: Sanjay Roy’s mother after his conviction in RG Kar case

New Delhi: A day after Sanjay Roy was convicted in the RG Kar case, his mother stated that if her son is truly guilty, he should be punished, even if it means the death penalty. Malati Roy reportedly said on Sunday that in case the court decides to hang him to death, she doesn’t have any objection as his crime has been proved in the eye of the law. She added that she would cry alone but accept it as a twist of fate, something determined by destiny.

Malati’s cottage is only 5km from Sealdah Court, which delivered the verdict that Sanjay was guilty in the rape and murder case of a young medic on August 9. The convict’s mother said she would have attended the hearing if the charges had been proven false. She pointed out that in spite of her deteriorating health, she would have tried to visit “if the charges were found to be untrue”.

She further voiced her sympathy for the victim’s mother, stating, “I can feel the anguish and pain of the mother of the young medic, who is like my daughter.” Malati has three daughters, one of whom died several years ago.

‘He turned to alcohol’

Meanwhile, Sanjay’s sister dubbed him as a normal child in his early years but added she saw a change in him as he grew older, particularly as he took to alcohol. She mentioned that she had never heard of any incidents involving him misbehaving with a woman.

She added that as Sanjay grew up, he turned to booze but apart from that she herself did not ever hear any case about him misbehaving with any woman. “Of course as we did not have regular contact with him in the past few years and he used to live in a separate locality I don’t have any fair idea about his associations and whether he was involved in any criminal offence,” she pointed out.

Sanjay’s sister said that media reports state that Sanjay was not alone at the site of crime. So, she added, she expected the investigation to have been thorough enough to confirm the role of only one person in such a crime. If others were involved, either directly or indirectly, they should also be thoroughly probed and held accountable, she added.

Sanjay has been charged under sections 64, 66, and 103/1 of Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita. The sentence will be announced on Monday.
