The government has imposed a penalty of Rs 600 crore for the delay in PAN-Aadhaar linking. The government informed Parliament on Monday that around 11.48 crore permanent account numbers are still not linked to biometric identification. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha that the number of PANs not linked to Aadhaar, excluding exempted categories, stands at 11.48 crore as of January 29, 2024.

Actually, a question was asked regarding the details of the government’s earnings by way of late penalty of Rs 1,000 on individuals who did not link their PAN and Aadhaar after the deadline of June 30, 2023. Responding to this, the Minister of State for Finance said that the total collection of fees from persons who have not linked their PAN with Aadhaar from July 1, 2023 to January 31, 2024 is Rs 601.97 crore.

Let us inform you that the last date for linking PAN with biometric Aadhaar was June 30, 2023. The Income Tax Department had said that the PAN of taxpayers who have failed to furnish their Aadhaar will become inoperative from July 1, 2023 and no refund will be made against such PAN. Also, TDS and TCS will be deducted/collected at a higher rate. Apart from this, PAN can be reactivated by paying a late fee of Rs 1,000.
