New Delhi: Celebrations turned tragic as 11 fans died and several others left injured in a stampede as a special victory parade and felicitation ceremony was going on to mark Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) maiden IPL win. The tragedy occurred outside Bengaluru’s iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday. Poor crowd management and overcrowding triggered the stampede.
However, this is not for the first time that such a tragedy has happened during a victory parade.
Liverpool victory parade incident, 2025: More than 100 people were injured, some critically, on May 26 when a car drove into a massive crowd of jubilant Liverpool fans during their Premier League victory parade. The shocking incident occurred on Water Street in the heart of Liverpool’s city centre. Thousands of fans had gathered to celebrate their team’s victorious season.
A 53-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences following the incident. The driver was believed to be the only one involved and the crash was not being investigated as an act of terrorism. Paul Doyle will appear in court on Friday, charged with dangerous driving, causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, wounding with intent to cause GBH and attempting to cause GBH with intent.
Ahvaz Military Parade Attack, Iran 2018: A military parade celebrating the anniversary of the Iran-Iraq War victory turned tragic on September 22, 2018. Armed militants attacked the parade and opened fire, killing at least 25 people, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) soldiers and civilian bystanders. The shooting continued for about 10 minutes.
Carnival Parade Tragedy, Belgium 2022: The local victory-themed parade in Strépy-Bracquegnies witnessed grim scenes when a car ploughed into a crowd, killing six and injuring dozens. The man was believed to be under the influence of alcohol. Terror was ruled out. National mourning was announced and scrutiny over parade security ordered.
Port Said Stadium Disaster, Egypt 2012: The Port Said Riot occurred on February 1, 2012, after a football match between the home team Al Masry and the visiting team Al Ahly in Port Said, Egypt. As Al Masry was celebrating their 3-1 win, thousands stormed the field. They were armed with knives, clubs, and rocks. Al Masry fans attacked Al Ahly supporters. Some fans were thrashed, others suffocated, and many were trampled in the chaos. As many as 74 people lost their lives and more than 500 were injured.
