He was born in a small village in Jind, Haryana. Life was never easy. His father passed away when he was in Class 5. His mother, who had studied only till Class 5 herself, started a small creche at home to make ends meet, taking care of 40 children every day. Pankaj Ashri and his elder brother delivered newspapers every morning at 3 a.m., rain or storm, and sold firecrackers during Diwali. Every rupee counted.

In college, he taught tuition to kids before attending his own classes and often skipped meals just to save money on hostel expenses. One thing that kept him going was his belief in learning English. Many in his village laughed at him for speaking the language. But he kept going slowly, consistently, because he believed it would open doors. And it did.
