Chamoli: The hill districts of Uttarakhand are on high alert due to continuous heavy rain and snowfall. The Meteorological Department and Defense Geo-Informatics Research Establishment (DGIRE)has issued a fresh alert for potential avalanches in hilly districts, with Chamoli in highly unsafe category, prompting the administration to take preventive measures.

Following the recent heavy snowfall and avalanche in Mana, the administration has heightened its alertness. In view of the further natural calamities, the Chamoli administration has put a ban on tourists’ entry in Auli.

The Defence Geo-informatics Research Establishment (DGIRE) has issued an avalanche alert for areas above 2400 meters in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh, and Bageshwar in Uttarakhand. Chamoli district has been labeled as extremely unsafe, while Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, and Uttarkashi are also considered unsafe.

Prohibition on tourists’ entry in Auli

In response to the weather alert, the administration has banned tourists from entering Auli until Monday. On Sunday, tourists were stopped in Jyotirmath, and they will only be allowed to proceed to Auli if the weather becomes normal on Tuesday. This decision comes after the recent heavy snowfall and avalanche in Mana, which has put the administration on high alert. Jyotirmath’s sub-district magistrate, Chandrashekhar Vashishth, announced that due to a weather alert on Monday, tourist entry to Auli is banned. Tourists will be allowed to visit Auli only if the weather normalizes by Tuesday.

On Sunday, all tourists heading to Auli were stopped at Jyotirmath. The ban on tourist entry to Auli will remain in place until Monday. The administration will only allow tourists to proceed to Auli if the weather normalizes by Tuesday. This decision aims to ensure the safety of tourists and prevent any further incidents caused by adverse weather conditions. The administration has urged everyone to be cautious and stay updated with the latest weather forecasts.

Weather forecast for seven districts

Meanwhile, the meteorological center has predicted light to moderate rain in several districts of the state, including Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Tehri, Pauri, Chamoli, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, Almora, Nainital, and Champawat. Light to moderate snowfall is expected in areas with altitudes above 2500 meters. A change in weather is anticipated from March 3, with the possibility of lightning and thunder in some places.

The recent avalanche in Chamoli’s Mana area has resulted in the tragic loss of eight lives. The avalanche struck early in the morning on February 28, trapping 54 workers from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). Despite the relentless efforts of rescue teams, including the Indian Army, ITBP, and NDRF, eight workers could not be saved. The remaining 46 workers were rescued and are receiving medical treatment.
