Why this lab is important?

Diabetic foot complications are a common but serious health issue for people with diabetes. These complications often occur due to poor blood flow, nerve damage, or infections. If not detected and treated early, they can lead to severe problems like non-healing ulcers, infections, and even amputations.

Dr Prashant Joshi, executive director of AIIMS Nagpur, explained the growing need for such a facility. According to Times Of India reports quoting Dr Prashant Joshi, diabetic foot disorders are a serious health concern.

The doctor said that this lab would improve care and prevent complications for patients in Nagpur and Vidarbha region.

What this lab offers

The laboratory offers advanced tools and services to help diagnose and manage diabetic foot problems. One of its key features is the ability to analyze foot pressure, which identifies high-pressure areas on the feet that are prone to developing ulcers or calluses. This allows doctors to create personalized plans to protect the patient’s feet from further damage.

The lab also conducts peripheral blood flow analysis using non-invasive tools like vascular Doppler and oxygen measurement devices. These tests help detect poor blood circulation, which can delay wound healing and increase the risk of amputation.

Another critical service offered by the lab is neuropathy analysis, which focuses on detecting nerve damage in the feet. Nerve damage often reduces sensation, making it difficult for patients to notice injuries or infections. Early detection of such conditions ensures timely intervention, preventing complications from worsening.

In addition to diagnostic services, the lab provides modern treatment options, including platelet-rich plasma therapy, advanced dressings for foot ulcers, and customized footwear modifications. It also uses total contact casting, which is an effective method for promoting healing in foot ulcers, as reported by Times Of India.
