Kolkata: In a tragic incident, a man, his wife and adult son were found hanging in their second-floor apartment in Kolkata. The neighbours at Rajdanga Gold Park, a locality off RB Connector close to Kasba Nabapally, heard arguments in the family but thought it to be like a usual quarrel. However, the family did not open the doors or the windows even opened once throughout the day, which made the neighbours suspicious.
Around eight hours later, the maid and the newspaper vendor went to Suvendu Kumar, a former employee of Indian Oil and a next-door neighbour of the family since no one was answering their calls, he immediately contacted the building secretary, and then the Kasba police were informed.
According to a report by the Times of India, Manasi Adhikari, a neighbour, said, “There never was a day when they shut themselves up. It struck us as odd. The elderly couple often argued, a regular affair for the last four to five months, but they never discussed the reasons with us. But both came across as approachable with a special love towards the weak, including strays, birds, and the pets in the area.”
Later, the police found Sarajit Bhattacharya (70), his wife Gargi (68), and their son Ayusman (38) hanging in their second-floor apartment at 50, Rajdanga Gold Park. The cops have reportedly called deaths ‘voluntary’. Joint CP (crime & traffic) Rupesh Kumar said, “All the deaths were caused due to the effects of ante-mortem hanging. Non-continuous ligature marks were found around their necks. No other injury could be found.”
The family wrote in the suicide note, “We are surrendering ourselves to God. We are leaving this world voluntarily.” Also, they expressed the wish to be cremated at the same place. The investigators reportedly believe the family died by suicide due to high financial debt. Ayusman was a person with special needs and was also suffering from depression. His parents were concerned about his wellbeing after their death, and hence possibly decided to die together. The cost of treatment for the son was high, resulting in financial debt. The family was reportedly unable to pay the rent for their current flat in Rajdanga.
According to the neighbours, Sarajit used to leave for his brokerage firm every day at around noon and Gargi, a former teacher, struggled to find students to give tuition classes. The cops have talked to the owner of the house and the family reportedly owed him money.
