Delhi’s green push: CM Rekha Gupta announces 2080 electric buses and paperless assembly transition

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has unveiled ambitious plans to transform the city into a greener and more digitally efficient capital. Central to this vision is the introduction of 2,080 electric buses, a significant expansion of Delhi’s public transportation network. This initiative, part of the state’s sustainable transport mission, aims to dramatically reduce air pollution and carbon emissions from public transport.

The addition of these 2,080 buses to the existing fleet of 400 electric buses, known as the Delhi Electric Vehicle Interconnector, represents a considerable commitment to sustainable transportation. Furthermore, plans for a comprehensive new EV policy will encourage the adoption of electric vehicles across the city, paving the way for a potentially complete transition in the future.

Beyond transportation, the Delhi Legislative Assembly is undergoing a significant transformation towards a paperless system. This initiative, driven by the Assembly Speaker, Vijender Gupta, showcases a commitment to digital governance and environmental responsibility. This transition will drastically reduce the Assembly’s paper consumption and contribute to a more sustainable administrative system. The Assembly’s commitment to sustainability extends further with the installation of a 500-kilowatt solar energy plant.

This plant is projected to save approximately ₹1.5 million monthly in electricity costs, showcasing the effectiveness of renewable energy infrastructure in public buildings. The government is also actively encouraging the adoption of solar energy in residential areas through initiatives like the PM Kusum Yojana, significantly increasing incentives to homeowners who install solar panels on their roofs.

The government’s commitment to sustainable development is further demonstrated by the allocation of Rs 100 crore for a pilot project to remove high-tension wires above residential buildings. This project demonstrates a multi-faceted approach to improving the city’s infrastructure and overall quality of life.

The combined efforts of several ministries, including those headed by Pravesh Verma (PWD), Shri Sahab (Environment), Ashish Sood (UD and Power), and Dr. Pankaj Singh (Transport), are key to successfully implementing this wide-ranging initiative. The collaborative efforts between the Centre and the Delhi government aim to create a cleaner, greener, and more efficient Delhi for its citizens.
