Delhi court issues release order for MP Engineer Rashid after grant of interim bail

New Delhi: A city court on Wednesday (September 11) issued a release order for Baramulla Member of Parliament (MP) Sheikh Abdul Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, following grant of interim bail till October 2 in a terror funding case.

Court granted Rashid interim bail on September 10 to enable him to campaign in Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections

Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh granted Rashid ingterim bail on September 10 to enable him to campaign in the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections. The court granted Rashid bail on a personal bond of Rs 2 lakh and one surety of the like amount. The court has imposed certain conditions on him while granting him interim bail and the conditions include that he will not speak to media about the case. The court directed him to surrender on October 3.

Rashid was granted the interim bail on a plea moved by him to campaign in the assembly elections in the union territory in which his outfit Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) is contesting. The assembly elections for the 90-member legislative assembly are scheduled to be held in three phases starting from September 18. The last phase of the election is scheduled on October 1 and results of the election will be declared on October 8.

Court on Wednesday deferred its order on Rashid’s regular bail plea

Rashid has also sought his release from the jail on regular bail in the terror funding case and the court, which was scheduled to pronounce its order on Rashid’s regular bail plea on Wednesday, deferred deferred the order on his regular bail application. The order is now likely to be pronounced on October 5.

Rashid won from Baramulla Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 general elections

Rashid contested the 2024 general elections from the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency while lodged in judicial custody in Delhi’s Tihar Jail and he defeated his nearest rival Omar Abdullah, the former chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Rashid is currently lodged in Tihar Jail

Rashid is currently lodged in Tihar Jail in the national capital in judicial custody in an alleged 2017 Jammu and Kashmir terror funding case under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). He has been lodged in the Tihar jail since 2019 after being charged by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the provisions of UAPA in the alleged terror funding case.
