New Delhi: A city court has extended the interim bail of Baramulla Member of Parliament (MP) Sheikh Abdul Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid till October 28.

Rashid sought extension of his interim bail on the ground of health condition of his father. The counsel representing the Baramulla MP submitted to the court that no violation of any of the conditions imposed by the court was alleged by the NIA and told the court that this was the last time that his client was seeking an extension.

NIA did not oppose Rashid’s plea for extension of interim bail

Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh extended Rashid’s interim bail after his plea was not opposed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which informed the court that it had verified the documents and not opposing the plea for extension of interim bail.

The court also deferred the order on Rashid’s regular bail plea in the case till October 28, news agency PTI reported.

Court on September 10 granted interim bail to Rashid

The court had earlier on September 10 granted interim bail to Rashid, who is facing terror funding charges, till October 2 with certain conditions imposed on him, including not to talk to the media about the case, to enable him to campaign in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections on a personal bond of Rs 2 lakh and one surety of the like amount. After his release from Tihar Jail in the national capital, he campaigned in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections.

The court, while granting interim bail, had directed him to surrender before the authorities concerned on October 3. His interim bail was later extended by the court till October 12 on an application moved by Rashid.

Rashid won from Baramulla Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 general elections

Rashid contested the 2024 parliamentary elections from the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency while lodged in judicial custody in Delhi’s Tihar Jail and he defeated his nearest rival Omar Abdullah, the former chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Rashid was lodged in judicial custody in Tihar Jail in an alleged 2017 Jammu and Kashmir terror funding case under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) since 2019 after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) charged him under the provisions of UAPA in the alleged terror funding case.
