Weighing only 1.3kg, the newborn was admitted to the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) due to poor health but succumbed within a few hours.

Hospital claims baby’s body was handed over to family

The hospital claims that the baby’s body was handed over to the family after death. “The child’s aunt received the body, and we have documentation with her thumb impression,” an NDTV report quoted Dr Singh as saying. However, on February 11, reports emerged that stray dogs were seen tearing apart an infant’s corpse near the hospital’s biomedical waste storage area. By the time onlookers intervened, the dogs had already mutilated the body, eating most of the head.

In response, the hospital administration has alleged that the grieving family abandoned the baby’s body within the hospital premises. “We believe the family discarded the remains in a plastic bag. The hospital tag on the body helped us confirm the identity,” Dr Singh added.

Hospital orders immediate inquiry

Lalitpur Medical College Principal D Nath has ordered an immediate inquiry, forming a committee of four senior doctors to investigate the matter. The panel includes paediatrician Dr D V Singh, surgeon Dr Vishal Jain, gynaecologist Dr Pranshi Asati, and paediatric specialist Dr Alok Tiwari. They have been directed to submit their report within 24 hours.

Meanwhile, in Saharanpur a 10-year-old child succumbed to injuries after he was attacked by a pack of stray dogs. The dogs surrounded and attacked the boy leaving him grievously attacked. The deceased has been identified as Purushottam.
