Kolkata: Indian Railways has reached another state of the Northeast under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Connect Northeast Mission’. Railway track has been laid till Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram and its speed trial was conducted on June 11.
A freight train passed through the new track and it was a successful speed trial. It is expected that soon passenger trains will also start operating on this track and whatever formalities are there will be completed soon. Mizoram will be the fourth state in the Northeast that will be fully connected with rail connectivity. Thanks to this, one can travel directly from Delhi to Aizawl by train.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has given this information through his official handle on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, “Connecting Mizoram capital (Aizawl) to every heart of India! CRS speed trial of Bairabi-Sairang new BG line project of Lumding Division – N.F. Railway.”

An excellent example of engineering
The project has four sections namely Bairabi–Hortoki section which is 16.72 km long, Hortoki to Kawnpui section which is 9.71 km long, Kawnpui to Mualkhang section which is 12.11 km long and Mualkhang to Sairang which is 12.84 km long. The total length of the project is 51.38 km and the cost is Rs 5021.45 crore. So far, 97 per cent of the work has been completed.
This entire project is a great example of engineering. It has 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, 87 small bridges, 5 road over bridges and 6 road under bridges. The height of bridge number 196 on this track is 104 meters (42 meters higher than Qutub Minar).
What is its strategic importance?
The area shares two international borders, one with Myanmar and the other with Bangladesh. The completion of this track will make it easier for people to travel from one end to the other from a strategic point of view.
