Congress seeks PM Modi’s clarification after Putin aide claims Trump stopped India-Pak conflict

On Wednesday, Kremlin Aide Yury Ushakov said that US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the recent military confrontation between New Delhi and Islamabad during their recent conversation over phone.

Ushakov was quoted as saying by Russia’s state-run TASS news agency: “They also touched upon the Middle East and the armed conflict between India and Pakistan, which was stopped with the personal participation of President Trump.”

Congress reaction

In a sharp response to Ushakov’s remark, Congress has asked PM Modi to clarify the comment made by Putin’s aide. Taking to X, Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh wrote: “President Putin’s aide Yury Ushakov has just revealed that the 4-day India-Pakistan conflict came up in the 75-minute telephonic conversation of President Putin and President Trump on June 4th.”

He added: “Mr Ushakov has let it be known that it was the personal involvement of President Trump that halted the armed hostilities between India and Pakistan. Will the PM @narendramodi clarify?”

Operation Sindoor and its impact

India launched Operation Sindoor as a strong response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror strike which claimed 26 lives. Under Operation Sindoor, India struck terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The strikes killed at least 100 militants. Following this, Pakistan carried out attacks and India gave a befitting reply. Fighter jets launched sorties, missiles were fired, armed drones deployed, and heavy artillery and rocket barrages intensified the confrontation.

After four days of intense fighting, military confrontation came to a halt on May 10 following a ceasefire understanding between the two neighbours. Since then, Trump has repeatedly contended that he was the one who prevented a full-blown war between India and Pakistan.

But, India has been asserting that the agreement to stop confrontation with Pakistan was the result of direct talks between the two countries’ Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs).
