Cold wave warnings across North India: Here’s IMD forecast & state-wise updates

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast that cold wave conditions will continue to prevail at isolated locations in parts of North India through the weekend. As per the IMD, cold wave conditions occur when temperatures fall below 4.1°C or when the departure from normal temperatures is more than 4.4°C below the average.

Cold wave conditions are expected in parts of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh until December 15, in some areas of Haryana and Chandigarh until December 15, and in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh until December 13.

In Madhya Pradesh, cold wave conditions are expected until December 16. Cold wave conditions in Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand will continue until December 14, in Delhi on December 13 and 14, and Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad from December 13 to 16. From December 12 to 14, cold day conditions are most likely in isolated pockets of Madhya Pradesh.

IMD forecasted no marked change in minimum temperatures over Northwest and Central India for the next five days. A gradual dip in minimum temperatures by 2-3°C may occur over East India during the next two days, with no marked change afterward and a gradual rise in minimum temperatures by 2-3°C is expected over West India (except Gujarat) during the next 5 days, the Met department said.

There will be dense fog conditions most likely in isolated places of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Bihar until December 13, and Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram until December 17. There is likelihood of ground frost conditions in isolated pockets of Uttar Pradesh on December 12 and 13.

Cold wave conditions at isolated places in Delhi

The IMD’s prediction for Friday in Delhi predicts a minimum temperature of around 4°C. The forecast states, “Cold wave conditions at isolated places. Smog/mist is likely in the morning. Mainly clear skies. Smog/mist is expected in the evening/night. The maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 23°C and 4°C, respectively.”

In Delhi, the IMD’s forecast for Friday predicts the minimum temperature to be around 4°C. The forecast said, “Cold wave conditions at isolated places. Smog/mist is likely in the morning. Mainly clear sky. Smog/mist is likely in the evening/night. The maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 23 and 04 degrees Celsius respectively.”
