New Delhi: A city court on Saturday remanded six persons, arrested in the case of the drowning of three civil services aspirants in the basement of a coaching centre in Old Rajendra Nagar, to four-day custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

CBI sought custody of six people to interrogate them in connection with the incident

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Nishant Garg sent the six persons – Abhishek Gupta, Deshpal Singh, Tajinder Singh, Harvinder Singh, Sarabjit Singh, and Parvinder Singh – to the CBI custody till September 4 on an application moved by the CBI seeking their four-day custody for their interrogation.

The CBI has registered the case for various alleged offences, including criminal negligence, dereliction of duties and corrupt practices indulged in by any person, including officials of the local authorities.

The court, while remanding the six persons to CBI custody, said that their custodial interrogation would be necessary for the purpose of investigation and for ascertaining the role played by various individuals who might have been involved in corrupt practices or criminal negligence.

“Considering the submissions in the application and in particular the scope of investigation in terms of the order dated August 2, 2024 of the High Court of Delhi, custodial interrogation of the accused persons would be necessary for the purpose of investigation and for ascertaining the role played by various individuals who might have been involved in corrupt practices or criminal negligence,” the court said, news agency PTI reported.

Three civil services aspirants drowned in coaching centre’s basement on July 27

Three civil services aspirants – Shreya Yadav, Tanya Soni, and Nevin Dalwin – drowned in the basement of the coaching centre – RAU’s IAS Study Circle – after the basement of the coaching centre was flooded following rain on the evening of July 27. All the three aspirants who lost their lives were preparing for the civil services examination in the national capital. While Shreya Yadav hailed from Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Haryana and Nevin Dalwin was from Kerala. The building of the coaching centre was later sealed.

Delhi High Court transferred probe of incident from Delhi Police to CBI

The investigation of the incident was initially being carried out by the Delhi Police and later the Delhi High Court transferred the probe to the CBI hearing a plea seeking investigation into the incident by a high-level committee.
