New Delhi: In a significant development, the Centre has fired Dr KV Subramaniam as its executive director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) with the immediate effect. No reason has, however, been given by the Centre for his removal.
Country’s youngest Chief Economic Advisor from the year 2018 to 2022, he joined IMF as Executive Director (India) in November 2022. Under the role, he also represented Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Bhutan at IMF apart from India.
Issuing a notice dated April 30, 2025, the government order said, “The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the termination of Dr Krishnamurthy Subramanian as Executive Director (India) at the International Monetary Fund with immediate effect.” His term would have been completed in November this year. The decision to remove him was taken by ACC, the committee which is headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Centre appoints Gedara as Alternative Director for South Asia
As per the report published in Times Now, the Centre has appointed Harischandra Pahath Kumbure Gedara as its Alternative Director for South Asia. The report said that the Centre would report the replacement for Subramaniam soon. The development came days before Pakistan’s meeting with the IMF on May 9
Know about Dr KV Subramaniam
Dr KV Subramaniam had earlier served as the 17th Chief Economic Advisor for India. During his education days, he studied electrical engineering at IIT Kharagpur. He later completed his MBA from IIM Calcutta. Subramaniam then earned his PhD degree in financial economics from the University of Chicago. He also held various positions in the Security and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) as well as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Among his key research include banking and monetary policy, corporate governance, banking regulation, bankruptcy, innovation & entrepreneurship, law and finance, and emerging markets.
