Celebi aviation license revoked: India’s response to Turkey-Pakistan support

New Delhi: India’s decisive action against Celebi Aviation, a Turkish firm, underscores the deepening geopolitical tensions between India and Turkey. The revocation of Celebis security clearance, announced by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, effectively terminates the company’s ground handling operations at nine major Indian airports. This includes crucial hubs like Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai, significantly impacting India’s aviation sector.

The Ministry’s statement cited national security concerns as the primary reason for the decision. This move follows Turkey’s perceived support for Pakistan during Operation Sindhur, a period marked by heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. This support included the alleged use of Turkish-made drones by Pakistan in attacks against India, although reports indicate these were successfully intercepted by India’s air defence systems.

Celebi Aviation’s substantial role in India’s aviation landscape, managing an estimated 58,000 flights annually and providing essential services including passenger handling, flight operations, and load control, makes this revocation a significant development. The firm conducts nearly 75% of its business with foreign carriers, underscoring the potential international ripple effects of this decision.

The action against Celebi is not an isolated incident. It follows a noticeable boycott of Turkey and Azerbaijan by Indian travellers. Reports suggest a dramatic increase in cancellation rates, exceeding 150% in some cases, reflecting public sentiment regarding Turkey’s stance on the India-Pakistan conflict.

This situation highlights the complexities of diplomatic relations and the potential for economic repercussions in the face of geopolitical disagreements. The revocation of Celebis license serves as a clear indication of India’s commitment to national security and its willingness to take decisive action against perceived threats. The long-term implications for India-Turkey relations and the future of Celebis operations in India remain to be seen.
