BJP Yuva Morcha demands Thiruvananthapuram Mayor’s resignation over sanitation issues

New Delhi: The BJP Yuva Morcha staged a significant protest in Thiruvananthapuram, demanding the resignation of Mayor Arya Rajendran. The demonstration, which involved a large number of activists, focused on alleged corruption within the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation, specifically regarding the appointment of sanitation workers. Protestors also highlighted the city’s deteriorating drainage system and inadequate waste management, exacerbated by the monsoon season.

The BJP alleges a pattern of corruption within the corporation, claiming that appointments are not based on merit but favour those connected to ruling party members. The poor state of the drainage system, they argue, is further evidence of mismanagement and neglect. This protest follows previous demonstrations against the Mayor, raising similar concerns about corruption and incompetence.

The protest escalated, leading to clashes with police. Authorities responded with lathi charges and water cannons near the corporation office. Several BJP activists attempting to enter the corporation building were detained. Prominent BJP leaders, including K Surendran, advocate S Suresh, and V V Rajesh, participated in the demonstration.

While the BJP and Congress have previously voiced their concerns, this protest also reflects internal dissent within the CPM, the ruling party in Thiruvananthapuram. Critics within the CPM are expressing anger and frustration with Mayor Rajendran’s handling of the city’s affairs.

The BJP’s call for Mayor Rajendra’s resignation is not a new development. Over the past two to three years, they have staged multiple protests highlighting issues of alleged corruption and mismanagement. However, the current protest emphasises the urgent need to address the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure and growing public health concerns.

The deterioration of the drainage system, coupled with the alleged irregularities in sanitation worker appointments, has exacerbated public dissatisfaction and fueled this latest demonstration. The event underscores the significant challenges facing Thiruvananthapuram’s municipal governance.
