New Delhi: In the heart of India’s sporting revolution, a quiet transformation is underway in Bihar. The partnership between the Simply Sport Foundation and the Bihar Sports Department is not just rewriting the playbook for athlete development-it’s breaking the silence around one of sports’ most persistent taboos: menstrual health.
A New Era for Grassroots Sports
Since its founding in 2020, the foundation has championed grassroots athletes across India, focusing sharply on women’s health, leadership, and holistic development. Their flagship ‘Simply Periods’ initiative, now in collaboration with the Bihar Sports Department, has brought menstrual literacy to the forefront of Bihar’s sports agenda, impacting over 724 athletes and coaches through 20+ workshops in just three years.
From Taboo to Triumph
The journey began in 2023 with workshops across Patna, Siwan, and Darbhanga, targeting athletes as young as 15 and from diverse sports. The findings were stark: 82% used sanitary pads, but only 13% knew their hemoglobin levels; awareness of conditions like PCOS and the Female Athlete Triad was almost nonexistent. Pain and discomfort were common, yet few accessed medical support or reliable information.
By 2024, the program had gained momentum. Coaches-often the first line of support-were trained to recognize menstrual symptoms and adapt training, though many still felt ill-equipped. Athletes, too, began to shed their hesitation, with more open conversations replacing euphemisms like “personal problem.” Nutrition surveys revealed a critical gap: while most athletes ate three meals a day, protein and micronutrient intake lagged, directly affecting both menstrual health and performance.
Tech and Taboos: The Next Frontier
This year, the initiative launched ‘Simply Berry’, a WhatsApp-based PMS tracker, integrating menstrual health with daily sports routines. This digital leap is bridging the gap between awareness and action, making menstrual tracking as routine as a warm-up or cool-down.
The Khelo India Catalyst
The upcoming Khelo India Youth Games in Patna and Rajgir will see the debut of the Simply Periods Kiosk-a first-of-its-kind educational and sensory experience. Here, athletes will handle period products, join discussions on reproductive health, learn exercises for pelvic strength, and receive free period care kits. Coaches and parents will participate in mini-seminars, while real-time surveys will feed into a landmark Menstrual Health Literacy Report for Indian sports.
Why This Matters for Bihar-and Beyond
Bihar’s commitment to female athlete wellness is setting a precedent for the nation. By prioritizing menstrual literacy, the state is not only enhancing performance and participation but also building a culture where no girl has to drop out, sit out, or stay silent because of her period. The Bihar Sports Department’s vision, combined with expert support, is ensuring that health equity and sporting excellence go hand-in-hand.
The Road Ahead
This alliance is more than a partnership-it’s a movement. It’s about equipping every girl with the knowledge, support, and confidence to own her body and her game. As Bihar steps onto the national stage at Khelo India 2025, it does so not just as a contender for medals, but as a champion for change.
From shy smiles to confident conversations, from ‘personal problem’ to ‘period planning,’ the transformation we’ve witnessed in Bihar is both humbling and revolutionary. The Simply Periods Initiative is proof that change begins with one conversation, one coach, one curious athlete.
With continued leadership and vision, Bihar is poised to become a model for the rest of India-empowering female athletes, one cycle at a time.
