New Delhi: The tragic stampede at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium during a Royal Challengers Bangalore victory celebration, resulting in 11 fatalities, has escalated into a major political crisis in Karnataka. The incident, which occurred on [Date of Incident], has prompted widespread condemnation and accusations of governmental negligence.
Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy of the Janata Dal (Secular) led the charge, directly blaming the Karnataka government for the chaos and demanding the immediate resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and Home Minister G Parameshwara. He argued that the government’s response, which included the suspension of five police officers, including the City Police Commissioner, was inadequate and failed to address the underlying issues of poor crowd management and communication failures.
BJP MP Jagadish Shettar joined the chorus of criticism, calling the stampede an “administrative failure” and asserting the opposition’s right to hold the government accountable for the loss of life. He echoed Kumaraswamy’s calls for resignations, emphasising the moral responsibility of the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister.
The incident is under investigation by multiple agencies. The Karnataka government ordered a CID (Criminal Investigation Department) probe, focusing on the chain of events leading to the stampede and investigating whether the necessary permissions had been granted for the large gathering. A magisterial inquiry has also been ordered to provide a comprehensive investigation of the event. The CID has formally visited the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to clarify the permission process for the event.
