Bengaluru: A Rapido bike rider allegedly assaulted a woman passenger in Bengaluru’s Jayanagar. The woman, who reportedly works at a jewellery store, and the rider got into a heated argument after she allegedly confronted him for riding rashly and jumping a traffic signal. A video of the incident that took place on Saturday has gone viral on social media.
The argument between the two escalated due to language barrier. The woman was speaking only English while the rider spoke on Kannada. The fight between the two turned ugly after the woman allegedly refused to pay the fare and return his helmet. Angered by this, the driver slapped the woman who fell to the ground.
The video, being widely circulated on social media, the two can be seen arguing and seeking bystanders help. No one intervened even when the driver slapped the woman. While the woman refused to file an FIR into the matter, a non-cognisable report has been registered and an investigation has been launched.
A similar incident had come to light in Bengaluru in September last year when a woman was allegedly physically assaulted by an auto driver after she cancelled the ride booked through an app.

Notably, Rapido has paused its bike taxi services from today in compliance with recent Karnataka High Court’s order. The High Court recently refused to stay the order on suspension of bike taxi services.
“Three months back, the court decided bike taxis were illegal. They had given six weeks. Again, on their request, they have given six more weeks. Now, 12 weeks are over, and they (aggregators) must follow the High Court’s order,” said Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy.
