Rishikesh: A 25-year-old civil services aspirant from Assam’s Dima Hasao district, Rosmita Hojai, has gone missing under mysterious circumstances in Rishikesh, triggering a massive search operation. Authorities suspect she may have drowned in the Ganga, though conflicting information has deepened uncertainty about her disappearance.
Rosmita had traveled to Delhi for the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) exam before heading to Uttarakhand with two male companions—Hemant Sharma, a former classmate from Haryana, and another friend—for a camping trip in Shivpuri. However, by the evening of June 6, her friends reported her missing.
Possible drowning or foul play? conflicting reports emerge
According to local residents, a woman was seen struggling in the water near the campsite, prompting fears that Rosmita may have been swept away by strong currents. Haridwar police immediately launched a search, deploying State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) divers to locate her in the river.
However, authorities have yet to recover a body, leaving investigators uncertain about whether she drowned or fell victim to another fate. SHO Pradeep Chauhan, overseeing the case, stated, “We fear she may have drowned, but nothing can be confirmed until a body is found.”
Mysterious phone call from an unknown number
Meanwhile, her family in Assam filed a missing persons report at Haflong police station after losing contact with her on June 6. In a disturbing twist, Rosmita’s mother, Solmodi Hojai, received a mysterious phone call from an unknown number the next morning. The caller, claiming to be a Uttarakhand police officer, alleged that Rosmita had died by suicide. Authorities are working to verify both the caller’s identity and the legitimacy of the claim.
Family’s search for truth intensifies
Rosmita’s relatives, deeply distressed, have traveled to Uttarakhand to join the search efforts and seek more clarity on what happened. Her mother stated that Rosmita had always spoken clearly and truthfully, raising concerns that her last communication on June 5—where she vaguely mentioned returning by train—may have been made under duress.
Adding to the uncertainty, two men who were last seen with Rosmita in Uttarakhand reported to Shivpuri Police Station, claiming she had been swept away by the river. However, the family was informed only days later, further fueling suspicions.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reached out to Rosmita’s family
The sudden disappearance has left her hometown in shock, with many urging authorities to speed up investigations. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reached out to Rosmita’s family, assuring them of all possible assistance in locating her. As SDRF divers continue searching the Ganga, Rosmita’s family remains hopeful for answers, appealing to the public and authorities for any information that could help trace her whereabouts.
