Arunachal musician booked for killing chicken, drinking its blood onstage

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against musician and artist Kon Waii Son for allegedly killing a chicken by slitting its throat and drinking its blood during a recent performance in Itanagar. The act, which was captured on video and circulated widely across social media, triggered huge criticism and sparked controversy within the community.

The FIR was lodged on Monday at Itanagar Police Station, based on a complaint from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India. According to police officials, Kon Waii Son faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960, IANS reported.

Hailing from Seppa in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Kameng district, Son is famous as a songwriter, composer and musician. His recent performance, however, has raised huge concerns about animal rights, which has prompted authorities to take legal action.

PETA urges mental health checks for animal abusers

In a statement, PETA India condemned the act and urged that people who engage in animal cruelty undergo psychological evaluations and receive counseling. PETA said that such behavior can indicate deeper psychological issues. PETA India also highlighted studies linking animal cruelty to other violent behaviors.

According to research published in ‘Forensic Research & Criminology International Journal’, individuals involved in animal cruelty are three times more likely to commit crimes such as assault, robbery and even murder.

To address such incidents, PETA India has proposed amendments to the PCA Act to increase penalties for animal abuse. The organisation’s proposal, sent to the Central government, advocates for more stringent measures to deter cruelty to animals in India.
