Army doctor saves elderly passenger mid-air on Chennai-Guwahati IndiGo flight

A 75-year-old passenger on IndiGo flight 6E-6011 from Chennai to Guwahati had a medical emergency on July 14. Around 6.20 pm, the elderly man lost consciousness and showed signs of hypoglycaemia, including heavy sweating, a weak pulse and cold hands and feet.

The cabin crew quickly gave him oxygen and made an announcement asking if any medical professionals were on board. Major Mukundan, an Army doctor who was returning from leave.

He examined the man and found him semi-conscious but with responsive pupils. He immediately suspected low blood sugar. With only basic items available on the flight, Major Mukundan gave him sugar and ORS (oral rehydration solution) and kept checking his pulse and oxygen level throughout the journey.

As soon as the plane landed in Guwahati, the passenger was taken to the airport’s emergency room. Major Mukundan continued treating him there. By 8 pm, the elderly man had regained full consciousness and was stable.
