New Delhi: Manipur, already grappling with the devastating impact of ethnic clashes, is now facing a new front in the ongoing conflict – a drone war. The use of drones to drop explosives in civilian areas has forced the state government and security forces to take drastic measures, deploying anti-drone systems to combat this dangerous new tactic.
The Assam Rifles has taken the initiative by deploying anti-drone systems in sensitive areas bordering the conflict zones. The CRPF has also joined the fight, testing and deploying one anti-drone system, with more on their way. “Assam Rifles has deployed a few anti-drone systems in the State at fringe areas to repel any rogue drones. CRPF has also tested one anti-drone system and given it to the force deployed in the State. Some more anti-drone guns are being brought to the State by CRPF shortly,” the statement said.
The Manipur Police has also initiated the process of procuring its own anti-drone systems to enhance security measures, the Manipur Police said in a statement on Saturday night. “The State Police has also started the process for procurement of anti-drone system to enhance its security measures and tackle threats from drones effectively.”
The escalating violence, marked by the recent use of drones and rockets, has underscored the need for a robust counter-drone strategy. At least three incidents of drone attacks in the past week have resulted in one fatality and over a dozen injuries, highlighting the deadly potential of these remotely piloted weapons.
To further safeguard critical locations, anti-drone systems will be installed at the Chief Minister’s office, Raj Bhavan, and the Manipur Assembly. A committee of top security officials, including representatives from the Army, CRPF, BSF, and Assam Rifles, has been formed to critically analyze the drones used by militants, collect evidence, and devise strategies to counter them effectively. “A proposal for this was already pending. This will be done at the earliest. Police have been told to expedite the installation of this project,” a home official said.
A team of experts from the National Security Guards and IIT Delhi are also assisting the committee in their efforts to address this unprecedented challenge.
