Amit Shah to carry out rally in Madurai; Over 10,000 BJP workers to be present

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent visit to Madurai, Tamil Nadu, holds significant political weight, particularly in the context of the upcoming 2026 state assembly elections. His two-day visit, commencing on the evening of June 7th, included a visit to the revered Meenakshi Amman Temple. However, the focal point of his trip was an address to over 10,000 BJP functionaries on June 8th. This gathering, held in the afternoon, served as a platform for Shah to publicly endorse Nainar Nagendran, the Tamil Nadu BJP president, as the party’s key leader in the state.

Shah’s message to the party cadre was clear: unity is paramount. The “unite or step aside” message underscored the importance of internal cohesion within the BJP as it prepares for the electoral battle. The selection of Madurai as the venue for this large-scale rally is strategically significant. Madurai’s central location in Tamil Nadu positions it as a critical hub for the BJP’s mobilisation efforts across the southern region. The party aims to strengthen its foothold in this crucial area.

Beyond the public address, Shah also held several crucial meetings during his stay at his hotel. These private engagements likely involved further strategising for the upcoming election. With the 2026 elections less than ten months away, the timing of this visit is particularly noteworthy. It suggests the BJP is actively initiating its campaign early, aiming to build momentum and project an image of strength and unity before the election campaign officially begins. Shah’s visit is broadly interpreted as a key event in the BJP’s broader strategy for Tamil Nadu, a state where the party seeks to significantly increase its presence and electoral success.
