As per the transport department, registration of electric vehicles has increased six times in the last four years. While several cities continue to face challenges due to the rising level of pollution, it is a good sign for the hill state to see growing demand for electric vehicles among people. It will help in reducing the air pollution in future.

The registration of electric vehicles increased six times in the last four years

Three years later, this figure increased to six times. In 2023-24, 17421 electric vehicles were registered in the state. The number of registrations of electric vehicles is increasing. In the current year 2024-25, about 13202 electric vehicles are registered till this month. The transport department hopes that the current financial year may see the registration of more than 25000 electric vehicles.

Registration of electric vehicles is tax free in the state

In Uttarakhand, the government has exempted the electric vehicles from the tax. For example, if one purchases an electric vehicle costing 20 Rs 20 lakhs, he or she is not supposed to pay any tax. However, the owner, who purchases a petrol car of Rs 20 lakh cost, will have to pay around Rs 2 lakhs as tax. Dehradun is leading in the list of the purchase of electric vehicles. As things stand today, about 4000 electric vehicles are registered with the RTO office of Dehradun.

Apart from electric scooters, electric cars are also registered

The transport department is happy with the growing interest among people towards electric vehicles. Apart from the scooters, the cars are also registered with the offices of RTO/ARTO. The transport department is extending all best facilities to the owners in the registration of their electric vehicles.
